Special Olympics Floor Hockey – 2018
The Cobequid Special Olympics Floor Hockey Tournament, sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council 6633, Truro, was held in Truro on March 16th to 18th.
The teams are playing for the Knights of Columbus Cup, which was rename this year in honour of Brother Jack Baird who past away early this year. Brother Jack was the individual that got the Knights of Columbus in Truro involved with the Special Olympics Floor Hockey back in 2004 and continue to part of organizing the tournament. The Cup is now known as The Jack Baird Memorial Cup.
There were ten teams from Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island involving 226 players and coaches. All games were played at the Nova Scotia Community College and the Douglas Street Recreation Centre.
The competition was held in three divisions of A, B and C. A total of 20 games played on Saturday and Sunday. The Truro A team being the overall champion and received The Jack Baird Memorial Cup.
The opening was on Friday night at the Nova Scotia Community College with a parade in with The Jack Baird Memorial Cup, a seven men Knights of Columbus Honor Guard from Assembly 2073 Truro, Knight of Columbus Special Olympics Chairman Sean Kelly and the Tournament Mascot. The closing was on Sunday afternoon with medals and trophies being presented by the organizers aided by 6 Knights in Regalia. During the tournament the Knights of Columbus acted as time keepers and scorers.
There were 24 Knights involved for 110 hours and the cost to the Council was $1,500.00.
